Conditioning the Youth Football Team
I will repeat my stance on conditioning a youth football team. I believe it is a waste of time, they way it is done by most coaches. I will give my explanation and see if I can convert a few.
I start out each youth football practice, with a warm up lap around the goal post. Since I practice on about the 30-yard line this is about a 40-yard run to the post and a 40-yard run back. This is done mostly as a “lets get the blood flowing and the mind ready for practice” lap.
I do not believe in wasting time at the end of practice lining the team up to run sprints or gassers for conditioning. If your five to 14 year old is not in shape when you get them, they will not get in shape by you running the p*ss out of them. Nothing irks me more than watching the youth football “coach” proves what a “man” he is by running his team to death. Give me a break.
I do believe that having the team run some sort of fun drill not only helps condition the team, but also lets the player have fun. When the players are having fun, they run like mad and do not even realize they are working out. I will give sample of the fun youth football drills in my book.
