Double Team Blocking in Youth Football

I am a huge fan of double-teaming to the hole you are running at.  The definition of the hole is the area where you want the ball carrier to run.  To keep things easy I just call out the name of the player I want the ball carrier to run over. I have found this to e a great motivation technique for the line since they know all eyes are on them for that play to work.

We use our scouting report to advise the team on where we believe the defense will line up and make sure we get a double team at the line.  The younger the ages of the team the less concerned I am about linebackers and the secondary.  I want to make sure we get a good double team right at the point of attack.

We spend countless hours, especially during stations, making sure that the lineman and the blocking backs know whom they are supposed to be blocking on each play.  It may look like we are practicing the same play repeatedly when I am making sure we know how to block it against various defensive fronts.

My experience tells me that the one area most youth football coaches fail in is telling their lineman whom to block. These are kids and when they are not sure of an assignment, they will hesitate.  When you have players on offense hesitate for even a minute it spells disaster for the offense.

I also believe that it does not matter how great your blocking technique is, the more blockers you bring to an area, the greater your chances of success.

Please review the double team blocking section on the website for the proper way to teach double team blocking.  I know it sounds strange but there is a right way and a wrong way of showing the players how to execute double team blocks.

It does not matter if I am running the Single Wing, Wing T, Power I or Run and Shoot offense.  I have run them all and double team blocking has been effective in all schemes.
