How much of my youth football practice time should I spend on Fundamentals?
I believe far too many coaches do not spend anywhere near the amount of time they should on the fundamentals. Most youth football coaches are worried about what kind of an offense they are going to be running or trying to teach some higher-level defensive scheme. This youth football coaches should be removed on site!
Football (especially youth football) is, and always will be about blocking and tackling. It is about taking the proper handoffs , wrapping up an opponent when you make a tackle and getting into a proper three-point stance.
Yeah, I know you are going to thro that God given greased lightning speed thing in my face. I do admit that the most important factor when looking for talent is speed, but once you have the players you have to make sure they are fundamentally sound.
Furthermore, there might be only one team in the league that posses that kind of speed, meaning all the other games will come down to the most prepared and developed team. The team coached the best will be the most fundamentally sound.
So now, back to the original question of how much youth football practice time should I devote to fundamentals? Including what I do during the warm ups, stretches, agility, form blocking and tackling, and stations, I would say about 70%.
