How much of my youth football practice time should I spend on Offense?
This is a loaded question. A better question might be how much time I should spend at my youth football practice running plays. I have observed a big disparity among coaches regarding the later questions. I know many of you want a definitive answer but I must clarify the position I will take.
The age and experience of your youth football team will have to be a primary reason that helps you answer this question. You will need to spend more time with a young youth football team to get them ready for a game. As a group they will need many hours of practice to run even one play perfect without mistakes. Do not get me wrong there will be mistakes made by all experience level teams, but the really younger kids just do not have the experience needed to run youth football plays to perfection.
I digress back to the original question, how much time to spend on offense. Truthfully, a good portion of the practice is offense related starting with the stretches and right on through the team offense. Each time we break into stations the offensive line station is working on some kind of youth football blocking scheme while the backs station is working on expanding the offense.
When stations end, we always run team offense. During our agilities, we run over pads while during fundamentals we will work on ball carrying.
Overall, I would say a good 65%-80% of my youth football practice is spent on offensive related practice
