How much of my youth football practice time should I spend on Special Teams?
Youth football coaches have different ideas on the priority of Special Teams. I believe youth football special teams are important and you want to make sure they do not hurt you. My motto is to make special teams as un-special as possible. Here is a list of the special teams.
- Point after touchdown
- 2 point conversion
- Kick off team
- On Side Kick Off Team
- Squibb Kick Off Team
- Kick Receiving
- On Side Kick Receiving (Good Hands Team)
- Punt
- Punt Receiving
- Field Goal
- Kick Quick
There are certain Special Teams I feel are more important than others in youth football. The most important Special Teams I practice daily are:
- PAT – Kicking it
- Squibb Kick Off
- Kick Off
- Kick Receiving
- On Side kick Receiving
- Punt
I spend between 15-30 minutes per practice on Special Teams. I want to make sure we do not turn over the ball on our special teams. I take a very defensive stance when teaching special teams to my youth football team.
