How to call plays in a Youth Football Game
Many factors go into calling plays in a youth football game. I have seen too many coaches, and not all of them were rookies, fall victim to the following
- Call too many plays, because they have it in their playbook
- Call too few plays, for a variety of reasons
- Runs plays they have not practiced
- Call too many trick plays
- Call too sophisticated plays
- Call plays like they are playing a video game
- Call plays like what they see on TV in the NFL
- Call College football type plays
- Run too much on obvious downs
- Pass too much on obvious downs
- Run plays without having a Game plan
- Run plays without a scouting report
- Not running their key plays enough
- Giving up too fast if something fails
Far too many coaches make the youth football offense much harder than it needs to be. These coaches are trying to re-live their playing days and call some ridiculous plays. These “coaches” are more concerned about “impressing” everyone with their knowledge, than making sure the players are taught good youth football fundamentals.
I think it is great to “push the envelope” in regards to the playbook, but not until you have the base plays in.
I believe that the best way to call a game is to have a game plan that is developed from your scouting report. I know it takes time, but something worth doing is worth doing well. I go into many details in my books, especially the playbooks.
