Speed is King in Youth Football
I write about this truth repeatedly. Speed is King in youth football. I am talking about God given, greased lightning speed. The kind of speed I am referring to is when your ball carrier can take a hand-off or direct snap and outrun the defense to the sideline. Once they reach the corner, they turn it up field and are gone for a touchdown.
I will reiterate that I am not talking about the fastest player on your team or the fastest player in the local school. I am talking about the fastest player in the league. The type of player that will strike the fear in the opposing teams defensive coordinator.
This kind of speed is rare. In my 20+ years of coaching youth football, I have had that kind of speed only twice.
Please check out my Youth Football Tryouts and Evaluations book where in the Spreadsheet and Power Ranking section I discuss the value of speed. I put an extremely large weight on speed during the evaluations.
