Team Drills West Point
Especially early in the year we run a lot of the West Point Drill. This drill is also known as Oklahoma, but I am old school and prefer West Point. Please review the section on the web site and the book that gives the complete details on how to run this drill. I believe it is one of the most important drills you can run while coaching youth football.
I run West Point with all different age teams and with tackle as well as flag teams. I ran West Point with a Powder Puff girl’s football team in High School, and they went undefeated for four years. Yes, I had a bunch of talent but that was not good enough. I wanted them to be the toughest most physical team on the field. We were and that was thanks to West Point.
Fast forward 20 years later and I am coaching a flag football team of four thru seven year olds. I was told they did not win a game the year prior and were 0-9. I explained to the kids even though it is flag football you need to be physical. The team that blocks better will compete better. The first year I was with the team they went 7-2 and followed that up with an 8-0 record the year after that. I give a lot of credit to the West point drill as it makes your team tough.
I will run West Point the last two day of my youth football tryouts as a confirmation I am getting the right players. I will continue to run it throughout the season as needed.
