Youth Football Team vs. Individual Punishments
This is one of the biggest areas of debate and disagreement among coaches. The question is whom to punish when one player acts up, the individual or the team.
I know many coaches who send the entire team on laps when one individual makes a mistake. I know other coaches who make the individual player who messed up do some form of punishment.
There is one more type of “coach” who takes no action ever and lets the “inmates run the asylum”. This is usually a Dad or a very young coach.
My belief is that depending on the situation you will need to punish just the individual sometimes and the entire team on another occasion. When we run some of our drills, if the individual player keeps making the same mistake without showing any improvement, he will earn a lap. During some of our competitive drills, we may have the losers do some exercises.
When we run team offense and the team keeps jumping offside or fumbling the ball, the entire team takes a lap. If the entire team is dogging thru drills they will do some team exercises.
